Beast and Cherub Palissy Majolica Chalice
An impressive chalice modeled in lead-glazed earthenware in the Palissy tradition. The cup is cylindrical with a slightly flared rim, glazed in a deep mottled blue-green on the exterior with an amber-brown interior. The body is applied in high relief with two distinct figures: beasts mask, and seated infants resting on a shell decorate the body of the chalice. The stem is formed by roots, hallmark of the School of Paris chalice form. The base is a broad, flat disc with a densely mottled, textured surface in ochre, green, blue, and brown. The underside is glazed amber-brown with visible firing bubbles and no maker's mark.
Good condition. Minor glaze wear and firing irregularities consistent with age and period production. No chips or repairs visible.
