A small baluster-form vase by French ceramist Marcel Vautier, featuring a flared neck and compressed body. The surface is finished in a mottled green glaze with applied gold highlights, including gilding to the interior. The front is decorated with a stylized figure labeled “HAROLD DO,” referencing Harold Godwinson, rendered in simplified lines and flat, opaque tones.
The piece reflects Vautier’s characteristic interest in medieval iconography, expressed through a distinctly modern, folk-inflected visual language. The scene depicted on this particular vessel is the one of the 29th scene of the Bayeux tapestry, dating back to the 11th century, telling the tale of Harold's coronation. Noticeable surface wear with extensive glaze losses, especially to the turquoise areas; painted medallion of Harold and inscription remain intact and legible. Structurally sound, with no cracks or repairs, showing an overall aged patina.
